August 17, 2016: Enraged at the sight of a black man and a white woman kissing on the streets of Olympia, Washington, Daniel Rowe, 32, walked up to the couple, yelled a racial slur, and lunged with his knife, grazing the woman and hitting the man in the hip (Washington Post, August 21, 2016). Local police stated, “The suspect is unknown to the victims and the attack appears to have been unprovoked.” The couple was treated for their injuries, and will be fine, physically. Court documents indicate that Rowe has tattoos that read “skinhead” and “white power,” and one depicted the Confederate flag. Rowe was arrested and booked on two charges of first-degree assault and possible malicious harassment, a designation used for hate crimes.
